Chicago, Illinois – High waves and life-threatening currents are expected to create dangerous swimming conditions along southern Lake Michigan beaches beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a Beach Hazard Statement is in effect for Illinois and northwest Indiana lakeshore areas, warning of hazardous boating and swimming conditions. The risk begins mid-afternoon Wednesday and could peak on Thursday, with waves topping 6 feet in some locations and strong structural and rip currents likely.

Residents and beachgoers in Chicago, Evanston, Gary, and Michigan City should avoid entering the water during this period. Dangerous conditions may be especially pronounced near piers and breakwalls. Boaters are also advised to use extreme caution, as high waves can capsize small watercraft.

The National Weather Service recommends staying out of the lake entirely through Friday evening. Officials urge anyone planning to visit Lake Michigan this week to monitor updates at weather.gov/greatlakes/beachhazards and to heed posted warnings and flags at local beaches.

This Beach Hazard Statement remains in effect through at least Friday night. Additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen or persist into the weekend.
