Duluth, Minn. – A volatile Sunday is unfolding across Minnesota, with a risk of isolated tornadoes and over 3 inches of rainfall threatening the Northland through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with the highest flood potential centered near Virginia, Duluth, and Grand Rapids—where 1–2 inches of rain are expected and some areas could see more than 3 inches. Thunderstorms will redevelop this afternoon, bringing the strongest potential for severe weather, including damaging winds and isolated tornadoes embedded within storm lines.
Communities from Ely to Hinckley may also face localized flash flooding as saturated ground combines with high rainfall rates. Gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to 1 inch are also possible, with a higher wind risk across International Falls, Hibbing, and Grand Marais.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid driving through flooded roads, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Storms may persist into the early morning hours Monday.
Additional warnings may be issued later today as storms intensify, and conditions remain favorable for tornado development.
