Duluth, Minnesota – Smoke-choked skies and an approaching round of summer storms will put much of northeast Minnesota on alert Tuesday, July 22nd. Dangerous air quality and possible severe weather could impact Duluth residents, especially those commuting along U.S. Highway 53.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, as wildfire smoke continues to blanket the region. Sensitive groups — including children, seniors, and those with heart or lung disease — should avoid prolonged exertion and remain indoors if possible. Meanwhile, a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives late Tuesday night, with possible heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
Smoke will begin to lift late Tuesday, but that relief brings instability. Storms are expected between 10 p.m. and overnight into Wednesday morning. Some storms may become severe with isolated flooding and small hail, particularly near Duluth, Aitkin, and along U.S. Highway 2. Breezy southwest winds may reach up to 20 mph.
By midweek, humidity builds. Wednesday’s high may hit 79°F, with another round of storms possible late in the evening. A brief cooldown comes Thursday before temperatures surge again into the weekend.
