St. Louis, Missouri – Heavy rain and gusty winds are set to impact northeast Missouri and Illinois today, with thunderstorms bringing a real risk of localized flooding and hazardous travel through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, there’s a 30–50% chance of thunderstorms sweeping through the region, especially along the Mississippi River corridor. Some storms could drop enough rain in a short period to flood low-lying roads, especially near St. Louis, Quincy, and Hannibal. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are possible during the strongest storms.
Local emergency officials warn drivers to avoid water-covered roads, especially on I-70 and US-61, where sudden ponding could make travel dangerous. Communities like Springfield, Troy, and Alton may also see brief power outages and slow morning commutes due to downed limbs or debris. Residents are urged to check local alerts, charge cell phones, and plan alternate routes if flooding occurs.
Today’s storms may mark the heaviest rainfall so far this July for parts of northeast Missouri, similar to the late-June deluge that closed several rural roads.
More thunderstorms remain possible into tonight, and additional warnings may be issued if flooding worsens.
