Lincoln, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across central Illinois this afternoon and again Wednesday, with isolated severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms are expected primarily during the afternoon and evening hours on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The main threats include strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall across areas including Peoria, Springfield, Champaign, and Decatur.

The Storm Prediction Center places much of central Illinois under a “Level 1 – Marginal Risk” for severe weather, meaning a few storms could turn strong enough to cause localized damage. Drivers are urged to stay weather-aware, especially during evening commutes, as sudden downpours may reduce visibility and slick roads.

Power outages could occur in areas that experience the strongest gusts. Residents should secure outdoor items, keep mobile devices charged, and avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms.

This pattern of summer storms is typical for late June but can still pose hazards, especially in urban areas prone to flash flooding.

Storm chances continue through Wednesday evening. Additional updates and alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
