El Dorado, Kan. – Streets in El Dorado turned into rivers Tuesday afternoon as life-threatening flash flooding engulfed parts of central Butler County, prompting emergency alerts and road closures through at least 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, issued via NWS Topeka, 4 to 5 inches of rain have already fallen, with another 1.5 to 2.5 inches expected. Local law enforcement reported multiple submerged vehicles, and residents are being urged to seek higher ground immediately.

The warning, labeled a Flash Flood Emergency—the highest level of alert—covers El Dorado, El Dorado State Park, the airport, and El Dorado Lake. Officials warn this is a “particularly dangerous situation” with catastrophic flood potential in urban areas, low-water crossings, and near small streams.

Residents should avoid all travel unless evacuating and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Nearly two feet of water can sweep away most vehicles. Those near creeks, underpasses, or flood-prone intersections should evacuate or shelter on higher floors.

More rainfall is expected into the evening hours. Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect through at least 6 p.m., with possible extensions as conditions evolve.
