Fresno, California – A rare overnight heat event is gripping Central California, with temperatures hovering near 90 degrees late Saturday across the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra foothills, posing a serious risk for heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday for Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, Merced, and surrounding communities. Overnight lows are not expected to dip below the upper 70s in many urban areas, limiting the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat.

Residents in areas including Hanford, Clovis, Madera, Porterville, and Delano should avoid outdoor activity, especially seniors, young children, and outdoor workers. Cooling centers are available in several counties. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges workers to take frequent shaded breaks and hydrate often.

This kind of sustained heat—especially at night—can lead to heat exhaustion or stroke, particularly without air conditioning. Wear light clothing, check on neighbors, and avoid strenuous activities until temperatures drop.

The advisory is expected to expire by 7 a.m., but more heat-related alerts could be issued as temperatures climb again Sunday afternoon.
