Orlando, Fla. – Dangerous heat and scattered storms are gripping East Central Florida today, with heat index values pushing up to 104°F in some areas and lightning threats expected into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, cities like Orlando, Leesburg, and Okeechobee will see actual highs near 92°F, but humidity will make it feel significantly hotter. A heat index of 102°F is forecast in Orlando, while Port St. Lucie could reach 100°F. Afternoon thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and moderate rip current risk along Atlantic beaches are all in play through at least 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Scattered showers are likely across the region, with a 60% rain chance in Kissimmee, Melbourne, and Sanford. Sanford is expected to hit 94°F—the highest in the region. Coastal areas including Daytona Beach and Vero Beach face a 50–60% storm chance, increasing the danger for swimmers and beachgoers. Rip currents could produce surf up to 2 feet, especially near piers and inlets.
Residents should limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., hydrate regularly, wear light clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces. Storms could also impact the evening commute with downpours and lightning delays.
Heat advisories and lightning risks remain active; further updates may follow as conditions evolve.
