Richmond, Va. – Eastern Virginia is facing a soaking stretch of rain today, with totals climbing to 1.5 inches in several cities including Norfolk, Richmond, and Williamsburg before tapering off early Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, showers began intensifying overnight and will continue through Wednesday evening, with the heaviest rainfall likely between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Precipitation chances reach as high as 100% in parts of the Tidewater region, including Cape Charles and Gloucester, before diminishing after midnight.
Tappahannock and portions of the Northern Neck could see between 1.5 to 2 inches of rain, raising concerns for ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas. Major routes like I-64 near Williamsburg and US-17 along the coast may see reduced visibility and slick conditions. Residents are advised to avoid flooded roadways and monitor local alerts.
The rain should ease by Thursday morning, but moisture remains in the area, with another round of scattered showers possible Friday. Officials recommend checking storm drains, charging devices, and allowing extra travel time.
Rainfall rates are expected to decrease overnight, but additional alerts could be issued if localized flooding worsens.
