Blacksburg, Va. – Travelers across southwest and central Virginia should prepare for slick roads and soggy conditions through Thursday as a cold, soaking rain settles over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a disturbance moving over Tennessee today and into Kentucky tonight is clashing with a wedge of cold air. This setup is expected to drop 1 to 1.4 inches of rain across much of the region, with high temperatures stuck in the 50s.

Cities like Roanoke, Danville, and Martinsville are expected to receive over an inch of rainfall, while higher totals—up to 1.4 inches—are possible in areas like Chappell Hill and Mount Airy. Daytime highs will remain unseasonably cool, hovering between 53°F and 60°F across the region.

Drivers should allow extra travel time due to reduced visibility and ponding on roads. Residents are encouraged to check storm drains for blockages and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.

This chilly, wet pattern could linger into Thursday evening, with more updates likely as the system shifts east. Rain gear and layers are recommended for anyone heading out over the next 48 hours.
