Washington, D.C. – Two Israeli Embassy staff members, identified as Yaron and Sarah, were shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum Wednesday evening while departing from an event, authorities confirmed. The fatal shooting has triggered elevated security responses at Jewish institutions across the country.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred near 3rd and F Streets NW. The FBI’s Washington Field Office is assisting with the investigation. Officials have not released the identity of the suspect, who remains in custody.
The Israeli Embassy in the U.S. issued a statement describing Yaron and Sarah as “friends and colleagues” and noted they “were in the prime of their lives.” The embassy added, “The entire embassy staff is heartbroken and devastated by their murder. No words can express the depth of our grief and horror at this devastating loss.”
Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, who was attending the event, condemned the attack as a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said on X that she was at the scene and offered her condolences, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem assured the public that the suspect will be brought to justice.
In response, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced increased patrols around synagogues and temples, despite no credible threats. “We are maintaining a heightened level of vigilance considering recent events,” the department said on Facebook.
The Capital Jewish Museum, located near the FBI’s Washington headquarters, focuses on preserving and sharing the Jewish experience in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
