St. Louis, Missouri – A weak line of storms could pack a punch in southeast Missouri and parts of southern Illinois this evening, where isolated severe thunderstorms may develop behind a passing cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a 20–30% chance of thunderstorms exists across the region Thursday, May 15, with the best chances for strong to severe activity focused on areas east of the Mississippi River. Storms, if they form, may bring damaging wind gusts, very large hail, or even a tornado.
While much of the state may remain dry, residents in Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, and Carbondale, Illinois, should stay alert through the evening hours. The strongest cells are expected after 5 p.m., with potential hazards peaking into the night.
Storm coverage is expected to remain low, but isolated activity could impact travel or outdoor plans. Those in the risk zone should review severe weather plans, charge devices, and monitor local alerts in case warnings are issued.
The severe threat will diminish overnight as the cold front pushes east. Additional updates may be issued later today if conditions become more favorable for development.
