Worcester, Mass. – A renewed round of heavy rain and thunderstorms could push rivers and streams over their banks in parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut through Tuesday evening, prompting a regional Flood Watch.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected across northern Connecticut and central to western Massachusetts, with isolated totals nearing 2.5 inches in areas hit hardest by persistent downpours. The watch covers cities including Hartford, Worcester, Springfield, Amherst, and Greenfield.
Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, particularly where storm drains are blocked or overwhelmed. Mainstem rivers like the Connecticut River and Hockanum River may approach or exceed bankfull levels due to runoff from last weekend’s 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall. Streams and creeks in Tolland, Windham, and Franklin counties are also at risk.
Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and allow extra time for travel, especially during the afternoon and evening commute. Residents in flood-prone areas should move valuables to higher ground and ensure sump pumps are working.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and additional warnings may follow if rainfall intensifies or shifts. Stay tuned to local alerts and check weather.gov for updates.
