New Orleans, La. – A multi-day flood threat is unfolding across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi as up to 6 inches of rain could swamp roadways, neighborhoods, and drainage systems beginning Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday evening for over 40 parishes and counties, including East Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Covington, and Gulfport. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are likely, with isolated higher amounts that may lead to rapid rises in creeks, rivers, and bayous, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Cities such as Houma, Slidell, and Hammond may experience flash flooding during heavy downpours, with urban centers like Metairie and Biloxi especially vulnerable to clogged storm drains and ponding. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded streets, secure outdoor belongings, and keep phones and emergency kits ready in case water enters homes or power outages occur.

This slow-moving system could trigger additional warnings or even flash flood emergencies in hard-hit zones. Residents should stay updated as watches could escalate quickly through Thursday.
