Jackson, Miss. – Residents across central and southern Mississippi should brace for flash flooding beginning Tuesday afternoon, with Jackson and Hattiesburg among the cities most at risk through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday until 7 p.m. Thursday as repeated rounds of heavy rain threaten to overwhelm creeks, drainage systems, and low-lying areas. Rainfall totals could exceed 4 inches in some areas, especially along the I-55 and U.S. 49 corridors.
The alert covers over 40 counties, including Hinds, Rankin, Forrest, Lamar, Madison, Warren, and Yazoo. Officials warn that excessive runoff may quickly lead to dangerous flooding along rivers, urban streets, and rural roads. Portions of U.S. Highway 61 and Mississippi Highways 27 and 84 are especially prone to closures during significant rain events.
Local emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, charge phones in advance of possible power outages, and keep an eye on rising water near homes or businesses.
This multi-day rain event is expected to linger through Thursday evening, with scattered thunderstorms bringing additional downpours. More flood advisories or warnings could be issued as conditions worsen.
