Minneapolis, Minnesota – A late SPRING cold snap is threatening gardens and sensitive plants Monday night as freezing temperatures return across the Twin Cities and west-central Wisconsin.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, low temperatures could drop near or slightly below freezing after sunset Monday, May 5. The brief but sharp chill may cause patchy frost in central and eastern Minnesota — including the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro — and areas of widespread frost in western Wisconsin.
Residents in Hennepin, Ramsey, Pierce, and Dunn counties should take immediate precautions. Cover outdoor plants, disconnect garden hoses, and avoid overnight watering. This comes just days before a warming trend that will bring temperatures back into the 70s by Tuesday afternoon.
Sunday brings more pleasant weather with sunny skies and highs near 75°F. But Monday night dips sharply into the low 30s in rural areas and upper 30s closer to the metro, increasing frost risk between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Drivers on I-94, U.S. Highway 10, and rural roads across Stearns, Kandiyohi, and Chippewa counties should be alert for early morning frost slicks or fog. No other weather hazards are expected through Thursday.

- Monday: Sunny, high near 75°F; frost risk late
- Tuesday: Sunny, high near 79°F
