Charleston, South Carolina – Thunderstorms could rumble into Charleston early Sunday morning, bringing lightning, brief downpours, and wet roads through the afternoon. A spring weather alert is in effect as unstable air moves into coastal South Carolina late Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service, a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms begins around 1 a.m. Sunday, with most activity expected between pre-dawn and midday. Rain totals may range between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Drivers on U.S. Route 17 and I-26 should prepare for slick spots and reduced visibility during early morning travel.

Sunday remains unsettled with a 40 percent chance of showers lingering into the evening. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s, but the threat of lightning makes outdoor plans risky. Winds from the south could gust up to 15 mph during stronger cells.
