Chicago, Illinois – A midweek drenching could bring waterlogged roads and slick commutes to the Chicago metro area starting Wednesday, with rainfall continuing into Friday. The National Weather Service warns of a limited flooding risk, particularly Wednesday night and Thursday, as repeated showers sweep across northeastern Illinois.

According to the latest Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Chicago, Wednesday evening into Thursday poses the greatest concern. Showers are expected to become widespread Wednesday night, accompanied by steady east winds before shifting southeast by morning. Rainfall intensity and potential for repeated storms could increase the risk of localized flooding, especially in urban low-lying areas and along major corridors such as I-55 and I-90.

The city may also see limited thunderstorm activity, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated. Nonetheless, residents should remain alert for ponding water during peak travel hours, and avoid driving through flooded intersections.

By Thursday, the rain continues with a 100% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms. The system is expected to weaken by Friday afternoon, with a slight chance of additional showers before conditions improve into the weekend.

5-Day Spring Weather Outlook for Chicago (April 30–May 4):

  • Wednesday: High 53°F, showers likely.
  • Wednesday Night: Rain continues, low near 50°F.

  • Friday: Slight chance of showers, high 56°F.
