Carlsbad, N.M. – Residents in Eddy County are urged to stay weather-aware Friday evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., raising concerns for damaging winds, large hail, and lightning across southeastern New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch was issued just before 2:40 p.m. and covers all of Eddy County, including Carlsbad and Artesia. Forecasters warn that thunderstorms could rapidly intensify, creating hazards for drivers along U.S. Highway 285 and State Road 31. Local emergency managers recommend securing outdoor items and preparing for sudden power outages as storms move through the region.
Travel delays are possible, especially along rural roadways where flooding or downed branches may occur.
