Midland, Texas – Residents across ten West Texas counties face dangerous evening storms, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Friday. Power outages, damaging winds, and hail could impact travel and outdoor plans from Andrews to Winkler County.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 173 covers Andrews, Crane, Culberson, Ector, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Reeves, Ward, and Winkler counties. The watch, issued at 2:40 p.m., warns of storms capable of producing 60 mph winds, quarter-size hail, and dangerous lightning through late evening.

Roads like I-20 near Odessa, as well as US-285 and rural highways, may become hazardous with sudden wind gusts and reduced visibility. Emergency management officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor local alerts. Power crews are on standby for potential outages, especially in rural areas.

Drivers should use caution, avoid flooded roads, and stay weather-aware as storms approach. If outdoors, move indoors immediately as lightning threat increases.

Storm threats remain active until 10 p.m. Further warnings or updates may be issued if conditions worsen. Residents should have multiple ways to receive alerts throughout the night.
