Wichita, Kansas – Storms return to Kansas this weekend, and the risk of severe weather intensifies by Monday night as hail and damaging winds target southeast regions, including Wichita. Residents near the Kansas Turnpike should prepare for rapidly changing conditions through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated showers may appear as early as Friday morning. While rain chances stay low on Saturday, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday night into Monday. Storms Monday evening could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail the size of golf balls — especially southeast of the Kansas Turnpike, including Cowley, Chautauqua, and Montgomery counties.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and secure outdoor items. Keep cell phones charged, monitor NOAA alerts, and delay non-essential travel during active weather periods. Sunday’s storms may begin after 6 p.m., with the most severe activity expected Monday night.

While spotter activation isn’t planned for Friday or Saturday, the NWS may update this as Monday approaches. Keep an eye on local alerts and weather.gov for updates.
