Spokane, WA – Gardeners across Eastern Washington and the Inland Northwest are being reminded to hold off on planting sensitive crops as freeze risks continue in several areas through early June.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, average last freeze dates vary significantly by location. While places like Wenatchee and Lewiston typically see their final freeze by early April, others such as Winchester and Newport may not be in the clear until June 8 and June 2, respectively.

Spokane’s average last freeze occurs around May 4, with surrounding areas like Pullman and Colville typically reaching their frost-free period by mid to late May. Higher elevations and northern zones, including Republic (May 28) and Mazama (May 22), can expect even later timelines.

The extended freeze window means residents should continue monitoring local forecasts and avoid early planting of frost-sensitive vegetables or flowers. Covering plants overnight or starting seeds indoors remains a smart precaution.

Historically, late freezes in the Inland Northwest are not uncommon due to varied elevation and microclimates. Gardeners are encouraged to use the average dates as guidelines but plan for occasional outliers.
