Charleston, WV – A dry and breezy Sunday will give way to rain and potential fire danger before winter-like conditions return midweek in parts of West Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service Charleston WV office, gusty winds will continue throughout Sunday, with speeds reaching up to 40 mph in the mountains and 30 mph in the lowlands. Breezy conditions, combined with low humidity, may increase the risk of fire spread, especially in mountain areas, before rain begins later tonight.

A cold front will pass through the region late Sunday into early Monday, bringing cooler temperatures and drier air. Daytime highs Monday are expected to remain in the mid-40s to upper 50s in the mountains and 50s to low 60s in the lowlands. Wind gusts up to 35 mph may continue, particularly in elevated areas.

Rain will return Tuesday and continue into Wednesday. While widespread impacts are not anticipated, the northeast mountains could see snow or a mix of snow and rain Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Precipitation amounts are expected to be light.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning Sunday and to monitor changing weather conditions, especially those traveling in higher elevations Tuesday night.
