Roanoke, VA – Fire danger will peak across Southwest Virginia on Sunday as spring warmth returns and gusty winds threaten to fuel rapid wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, strong winds up to 35 mph combined with low humidity and dry fuels will create dangerous fire conditions Sunday, especially across the I-81 corridor and surrounding mountainous areas. Counties including Roanoke, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Giles remain under an elevated fire risk from late Sunday morning through early evening.
Officials are urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning. If burning is necessary, extreme caution is advised. Wind-driven fires can quickly escape control. Residents should have fire suppression tools nearby and ensure all smoking materials are fully extinguished.
Beyond Sunday’s fire concerns, Virginia will enjoy a brief taste of spring. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high near 56°F. Winds will remain breezy through the afternoon before calming by night.
Looking ahead, showers are expected to develop overnight Sunday into Monday, with a 60% chance of rain persisting into early Monday. Highs will climb to the mid-60s before skies clear midweek. Here’s the 5-day spring preview:
- Monday: Showers likely, high near 66°F.
- Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 61°F.
- Wednesday: Clear and dry, high near 64°F.
- Thursday: Sunny skies, high around 59°F.
- Friday: Warming back up to 66°F with plenty of sunshine.
Residents are reminded to check local burn permits and stay weather-aware throughout the weekend.
