Greenville, NC – A statewide open burning ban is now in effect across much of Eastern North Carolina as spring weather accelerates wildfire risk.

Strong southwest winds, bone-dry ground conditions, and plunging humidity levels have created a heightened fire danger across Pitt, Craven, Beaufort, Lenoir, and surrounding counties this weekend. Gusts may reach up to 25 mph Sunday afternoon, posing a major concern for brush fires near highways like US-17 and US-70.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a special weather statement remains active through Sunday. Winds will remain gusty and humidity could fall below 25 percent, increasing fire spread potential across communities including Greenville, Kinston, New Bern, Jacksonville, and Havelock.

The North Carolina Forest Service has canceled all burning permits until further notice. Residents are urged not to ignite outdoor fires, even in barrels or grills, as flames can quickly jump containment lines in these dry, breezy conditions.

Looking ahead, Sunday’s high in Greenville is expected to hit 66°F under sunny skies, with calmer winds by late evening. Monday brings a 40% chance of light showers, but dry air dominates most of the week. Temperatures will hover in the upper 60s to low 70s through Friday, providing a mild, spring-like trend.

Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be clear and calm with highs in the upper 60s. Winds will shift by midweek but remain light.

Residents should monitor local alerts and postpone outdoor burning until conditions improve.
