Portland, OR – A powerful winter storm is set to impact the Oregon and Washington Cascades, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pendleton and Portland, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 11 p.m. Thursday. The storm is expected to bring up to 20 inches of snow above 5000 feet, with gusty winds reaching 40 mph, further reducing visibility and making travel treacherous.

Affected areas include the East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades, the North Oregon Cascades, and parts of Washington’s South Cascades. Cities such as Sisters, Camp Sherman, Sunriver, La Pine, and Government Camp will likely see significant snowfall, especially at higher elevations.

Travelers are urged to exercise extreme caution or postpone trips. Authorities warn of slick and snow-covered roads, especially on mountain passes like Santiam Pass, Willamette Pass, and McKenzie Pass. Bridges and overpasses will be particularly hazardous due to ice accumulation.

Residents should prepare for potential power outages caused by falling branches and heavy snow. Emergency kits, including tire chains, blankets, food, and water, are recommended for those who must travel.
