Chicago, IL – A strong storm system is set to impact Illinois Friday night into Saturday, bringing a range of hazards, including damaging winds, the risk of tornadoes, and fire danger due to dry conditions. The National Weather Service warns residents to stay prepared as severe storms move from southwest to northeast across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected between 8 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, with wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Areas southwest of Rockford to Paxton have the highest tornado risk, while isolated hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible.

Beyond thunderstorms, strong winds and dry air create a heightened fire risk through Saturday. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to secure loose objects. Wind gusts up to 50 mph Friday and 60 mph Saturday could lead to downed trees and power outages.

With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations expected across the region, officials advise staying weather-aware, ensuring multiple ways to receive alerts, and avoiding outdoor fires throughout the weekend. For the latest updates, visit weather.gov/chicago.
