Newport, NC – A storm warning remains in effect for coastal waters off North Carolina from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with hazardous conditions expected for mariners.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, storm-force winds of 30 to 40 knots, with gusts up to 55 knots, will impact waters from Oregon Inlet to Surf City. Seas are forecasted to reach heights of 12 to 17 feet, creating dangerous conditions for vessels.
The affected areas include the waters south of Oregon Inlet to Cape Hatteras, south of Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke Inlet, and south of Ocracoke Inlet to Cape Lookout, including the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.
Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, secure their vessels, or alter their course to avoid severe weather. The combination of powerful winds and high seas poses a significant risk of capsizing or damage to boats, as well as severely reduced visibility.
The storm warning is expected to expire by 9 p.m. Wednesday, but conditions may take time to improve. Mariners should continue monitoring official updates from the National Weather Service before resuming activities on the water.
