Las Animas, CO – The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for blowing dust across southeastern Colorado, in effect from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday.
According to state health officials, the advisory impacts Bent, Prowers, Otero, Las Animas, and Baca counties, including cities such as Las Animas, Lamar, La Junta, Kim, Trinidad, and Springfield. Widespread blowing dust is being transported into the region, reducing visibility and potentially impacting air quality.
The advisory warns that blowing dust could reduce visibility to less than 10 miles across a wide area. Residents with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children are advised to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities until conditions improve. The dust is expected to gradually diminish by late Monday evening.
Officials recommend staying indoors when possible, using air filtration systems, and avoiding activities that stir up additional dust. Those traveling through affected areas should exercise caution due to potential visibility issues on roadways.
For real-time air quality updates and further guidance, residents are encouraged to visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s website or follow local emergency management alerts.
