Columbus, Franklin County, OH – Authorities are warning residents across Central Ohio about a scam involving fake traffic violation notices that attempt to trick victims into making payments.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, multiple reports have surfaced of individuals receiving messages claiming to be from the Franklin County Municipal Court. The notices, often labeled as a “Final Notice – Court Enforcement Action,” allege recipients owe money for outstanding traffic violations tied to their vehicle registration.
Officials say the messages frequently include a QR code or link directing victims to submit payment. However, law enforcement emphasized that these notices are fraudulent and urged residents not to scan any codes or click unfamiliar links.
The sheriff’s office stated that legitimate government agencies do not request payment for tolls, parking tickets, or speeding violations through unsolicited text messages. Any unexpected demand for payment via text should be treated as a scam.
Residents who receive suspicious notices are encouraged to verify claims by contacting the appropriate agency directly using official phone numbers or websites. Authorities also recommend reporting scams to local law enforcement to help prevent further incidents.
The warning comes as scams involving impersonation of courts and government agencies continue to rise across Ohio and nationwide.
Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with suspicious communications.
