Zion, IL – Authorities in Zion arrested two individuals Monday in connection with serious felony charges, including the March 2024 shooting death of a local man and a separate Waukegan shooting. The arrests took place following a multi-agency operation at a residence on the 2100 block of Hebron Avenue.
According to a public notification released Tuesday by the Zion Police Department, Darris Bonner, 20, was apprehended on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm, allegedly tied to the fatal shooting of Jamari Smith in March 2024. Jasmine Piggs, 27, was allegedly wanted for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in a separate Waukegan incident. Both suspects were taken into custody around 5 p.m. after police developed credible information regarding their whereabouts.
Earlier in the day, Zion detectives reportedly identified Bonner’s location inside the Hebron Avenue residence. While coordinating with the Waukegan Police Department’s Community Crimes Division, investigators allegedly learned Piggs was also present.
Shortly before the arrests, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System’s Emergency Services Team, along with Zion Police, Waukegan Police, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, converged on the residence to facilitate the suspects’ surrender. Bonner and Piggs were then transported to local police departments, with Piggs being turned over to Waukegan authorities. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in First Appearance Court on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Additional search warrants at the scene allegedly led to the seizure of multiple firearms and related accessories. Authorities say further charges remain under investigation.
The Zion Police Department commended its officers and partner agencies for their roles in the safe apprehension of both suspects.
