Yuma County, CO – Multiple large and fast-moving grass fires are burning across Yuma County in eastern Colorado, prompting evacuation orders and urgent warnings from local and state officials.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, several significant fires are actively burning, with expansive evacuation orders currently in place. Officials are urging residents to heed all evacuation notices immediately and advising motorists to avoid traveling through Yuma County if they are not local.
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office reports that three active fires remain as of the latest update. The largest fire is located south of Eckley, roughly near County Road 32 & N to County Road 27 & W. Two additional fires are burning near 48 & Q to the north and L & 2 to the south.
Authorities say several fires are scattered throughout the county, and conditions remain volatile due to strong winds, dry fuels, and rapidly changing fire behavior. Some previously reported fires, including one near 43 & N, are now out, but others remain a serious threat.
For residents who are ordered to evacuate—either by reverse 911, law enforcement, or personal judgment—official evacuation centers are open at:
- Yuma High School (auxiliary gym)
- Grassroots in Joes
- Wray EMS Barn
Officials urge evacuees to drive with hazard lights on and remain alert for downed power lines, blown-over poles, and debris on roadways.
Emergency managers stress that conditions can change quickly, and residents should continue monitoring official updates from Yuma County Emergency Management and local law enforcement.
Anyone in threatened areas should prepare to evacuate immediately if conditions worsen.
