Fresno, CA – The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada, in effect through 9 a.m. Thursday.

The advisory covers areas above 9,000 feet, including Yosemite National Park (outside the valley), Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park, and the Upper San Joaquin River region. Locations such as Huntington Lake, Tuolumne Meadows, Florence Lake, and Shaver Lake are included in the affected area.

Forecasters warn that wind chills could drop to around 10 degrees below zero, creating dangerous conditions for hikers, campers, and backcountry travelers. Prolonged exposure could quickly lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

Those venturing outdoors should wear multiple layers, insulated clothing, gloves, and head coverings. The NWS also advises minimizing time outside and ensuring pets and livestock are sheltered from the cold.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise Thursday afternoon as winds ease.
