Yorkville, IL – A former Plano financial advisor has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for allegedly exploiting an elderly client, following a blind plea to felony charges earlier this year.
According to the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, Bradley Goodbred, formerly of Plano, Illinois, was sentenced Monday in front of the Honorable Jody Gleason. The sentence comes after Goodbred allegedly admitted to Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Person, a Class 1 Felony, related to a scheme that reportedly began as early as 2010.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began in January 2021, after the court-appointed guardian for the elderly victim—born in 1924—reported suspicious financial activity to the Yorkville Police Department. Authorities allege Goodbred, who was the victim’s financial advisor at LPL Financial, used his position as Power of Attorney to gain access to the victim’s trust and checking accounts. Goodbred allegedly convinced the victim to “invest” in his company, then withdrew funds and transferred the money to his personal accounts.
Between May 2019 and February 2020, Goodbred allegedly took nearly $340,000. According to court testimony, further investigation uncovered that Goodbred allegedly stole just over $1 million in total, with activity dating back to 2011.
At sentencing, Judge Gleason stated that a lesser sentence would not reflect the seriousness of the offense and that Goodbred had allegedly groomed and preyed on the victim for years. Goodbred must serve at least one year of supervised release after his prison term.
Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis commended the Yorkville Police Department for its investigation, emphasizing that the elderly can be especially vulnerable to exploitation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Andrea Boyle, while Goodbred was represented by attorney Harry Smith.
