Yorkville, IL — Dangerous extreme cold is expected to impact Yorkville and Kendall County late Thursday night into Friday morning, with wind chills dropping as low as -35 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, arctic air moving into northern Illinois will drive wind chills between -20° and -35° early Friday, creating a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia. The most dangerous conditions are expected Friday morning, when even short periods of outdoor exposure could become life-threatening.

Forecasters warn that exposed skin may develop frostbite in as little as 10 to 20 minutes under these conditions. While air temperatures may be higher, strong winds will significantly increase cold stress, especially during morning travel and school commute hours.

Local officials emphasized that winter fashion choices should take a back seat to safety during this cold snap. Heavy coats, gloves, hats, and insulated footwear are strongly recommended. Hoodies and light jackets are not sufficient protection in these conditions.

The extreme cold may also affect vehicles, causing starting issues and increasing the danger if drivers become stranded. Residents are urged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles and limit time outdoors whenever possible.

Temperatures are expected to remain cold through the weekend, with additional periods of sub-zero wind chills possible Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Residents in Yorkville should plan ahead, check on vulnerable neighbors, bring pets indoors, and closely monitor weather updates as conditions develop.
