York, SC – The York County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents today about a new wave of scam calls involving individuals allegedly impersonating law enforcement officers.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the callers claim to represent local authorities and often use alarming language to pressure victims. Common phrases include: “You’ve missed jury duty,” “There’s an urgent matter to discuss,” or “There’s an emergency at the jail, and you can bond your loved one out.”

Deputies stressed that these calls are fraudulent. “If you don’t know who the call is coming from, press decline or hang up,” the department posted in a social media alert Wednesday. Residents are urged not to call the number back, even if the message appears urgent.

Authorities said these scams typically attempt to exploit fear or confusion, tricking victims into sending money or sharing personal information. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that it never demands payment over the phone for missed jury duty, warrants, or emergencies.

York County officials encouraged residents to share the warning with family members, especially seniors who are often targeted by phone-based scams. Anyone who receives one of these calls should report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 803-628-3059.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor reports of impersonator scams across York County and the greater Charlotte metro area.
