York, ME – Drivers on the Maine Turnpike experienced major delays Monday after a fatal crash near Mile 5 southbound left one woman dead and reduced traffic to a crawl for several hours.

According to the Maine State Police, the crash happened on Monday, December 8, 2025, at approximately 3:14 p.m. Troop G Troopers responded after a 2022 Western Star tractor-trailer, which had pulled into the breakdown lane due to a mechanical malfunction, was struck from behind by a 2014 Toyota sedan.

Police said the tractor-trailer operator had placed reflective warning triangles in the breakdown lane before the collision. As the truck remained stopped, the Toyota—driven by 81-year-old Janice Goldsmith of Needham, Massachusetts—allegedly hit the rear of the trailer at speed. Goldsmith was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to officials.

Traffic on the southbound Turnpike experienced significant disruption. Authorities said the roadway was reduced to one lane for roughly three hours while Troopers and first responders processed the scene. Afterward, the area was limited to two lanes for an additional two hours before the highway fully reopened early Monday evening.

Maine State Police thanked all assisting agencies for their support as the investigation continues.
