Yerington, Nevada – A shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck western Nevada Saturday morning, jolting communities across Lyon County and parts of the Carson City region with a brief but noticeable shake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit about 22 kilometers north-northeast of Yerington just after 7 a.m. local time, registering at a depth of roughly 2.3 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes like this one are more likely to be felt near the epicenter, even at lower magnitudes.

Residents in Yerington, Smith Valley, Dayton, and areas east of Carson City reported light shaking, with some describing a quick jolt followed by minor rattling of windows and household items. No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported, and there were no disruptions to major roadways such as U.S. Route 95 or State Route 208.

Emergency managers say earthquakes of this size are common in western Nevada, which sits within an active seismic zone tied to Basin and Range fault systems. Officials still urge residents to review basic safety steps, including securing heavy furniture and knowing safe places to drop and cover if stronger shaking occurs.

Authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks, though none were immediately confirmed. Additional updates may be issued if seismic activity increases later Saturday or into the coming days.
