Jackson, WY – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 5 p.m. Wednesday for Yellowstone National Park and the Teton, Gros Ventre, and Absaroka Mountains, where forecasters warn of heavy snow and extreme winds, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton.
Snow totals are expected to reach 8 to 18 inches across the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, with 8 to 15 inches in the Absarokas and southwestern Yellowstone Park. Lighter accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are forecast for northern Yellowstone, while Mammoth Hot Springs may see less than two inches.
Winds gusting 60 to 70 mph along ridgelines will produce blowing and drifting snow, leading to whiteout conditions and dangerous travel, especially across Teton and Togwotee Passes. Officials strongly discourage backcountry travel until the storm subsides.
Travelers in the region should be prepared for rapidly deteriorating visibility and snow-covered roads. If driving is unavoidable, carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water.
