JACKSON, Wyo. – A potent early-season snowstorm is moving into northwest Wyoming Sunday, bringing several inches of mountain snow and powerful winds capable of creating near-whiteout conditions over high passes. The National Weather Service in Riverton said a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from noon Sunday through noon Monday for the Absaroka, Teton, and Gros Ventre Mountains.
According to the Weather Service, total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected above 8,000 feet, with higher elevations near Mount Leidy and Togwotee Pass seeing localized totals over a foot. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph, producing blowing and drifting snow and significantly reduced visibility late Sunday night.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation urged drivers to avoid unnecessary mountain travel overnight, particularly along Teton Pass (WY-22) and U.S. 26/287 near Togwotee Pass, where slick and snow-packed conditions are likely. High-profile vehicles may also face hazardous crosswinds.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow will fall from late Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning before tapering by midday. Temperatures will remain below freezing above 7,000 feet, keeping snow in place into early week.
