McMinnville, OR – A man died Saturday afternoon after experiencing a medical emergency while swimming in the Willamette River, according to the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies reported that around 3:45 p.m. on September 13, a sheriff’s deputy and Marine Safety Officer were on patrol near Willamette Mission Park, just north of the Wheatland Ferry, when they saw people in the water and heard cries for help.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the officers used a patrol boat to reach the group and pulled an unconscious male from the river. He was taken to the Yamhill County side of the ferry landing, where paramedics were waiting.
CPR and AED monitoring were administered on board until emergency crews arrived. Paramedics declared the man deceased shortly after. Preliminary findings suggest he suffered a medical event while swimming, though additional testing is underway as part of the death investigation in coordination with the medical examiner.
Authorities noted that friends of the victim had worked to keep his head above water while calling for help.
The Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to those affected by the incident.
