Yakutat, Alaska – A cluster of small but noticeable earthquakes rattled a remote stretch north of Yakutat on Sunday, with three shallow quakes, all within roughly 20 minutes, recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to USGS data, the strongest was a magnitude-4.3 quake that struck at 12:55 p.m. UTC about 86 kilometers north of Yakutat at a depth of just 1 kilometer, followed minutes later by a magnitude-3.9 event and a magnitude-3.2 quake in the same general area. All three originated along a seismically active corridor inland from Alaska’s Gulf Coast.

The quakes occurred in a sparsely populated region, and no damage reports or shaking responses were submitted as of early Sunday afternoon. Still, shallow earthquakes of this magnitude can be felt by communities along the coast, including Yakutat, depending on terrain and soil conditions.

Emergency managers in Southeast Alaska encourage residents to review earthquake safety steps, including securing heavy items in homes and keeping emergency kits stocked. With tectonic activity common along the Pacific coastal interior, officials note that aftershocks are possible.

USGS will continue monitoring the sequence, and additional updates may follow if more quakes occur.
