Yakima, Washington – An active weather pattern is returning to the region, with the most significant impacts expected tonight through Wednesday as heavy rain changes to snow across the Washington Cascades.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, mountain passes in the Washington Cascades have a 60 to 80 percent chance of receiving 5 to 7 inches of snow through Wednesday. Precipitation will begin as heavy rain, then transition to snow this evening, leading to deteriorating travel conditions overnight.
The most affected period will be late tonight into Wednesday, when snowfall rates increase at pass levels. Reduced visibility, snow-covered roads, and slick conditions are expected, particularly during overnight travel and early morning hours.
Forecasters also warn that melted snow during daytime hours may refreeze overnight, creating icy spots even after snowfall tapers. Trucks and SUVs may experience reduced traction, especially on untreated or compacted snow surfaces.
Drivers traveling through the Cascades for the holidays are urged to slow down, check road conditions, and carry emergency supplies. Road conditions and pass updates are available through tripcheck.com and wsdot.com.
