Riverton, WY – Early October snow is causing difficult travel conditions across several Wyoming mountain ranges Sunday, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for multiple regions through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, snow will continue through 6 p.m. MDT Sunday in the Teton, Gros Ventre, Wind River, and Absaroka Mountains, while the Bighorn Mountains will remain under advisory until 11 p.m. MDT.
Forecasters report accumulations of 5 to 9 inches above 9,500 feet in the Wind River and Absaroka Mountains, with 3 to 8 inches possible in the Bighorn range. Teton and Togwotee Passes may see an additional 2 to 5 inches, creating slick and snow-covered roadways.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation warns travelers to slow down and use caution, particularly along US 14 over Granite Pass and US 16 over Powder River Pass, where visibility may be reduced at times.
Motorists planning to cross mountain passes should check the latest conditions at wyoroad.info before traveling. This early-season snow is expected to taper off late tonight as drier air moves in.
