Cody, Wyo. – A powerful early-season storm could bury Wyoming’s high country this weekend, with more than a foot of snow possible in the Absaroka and Bighorn mountains. Drivers heading over the state’s high passes may face dangerous travel conditions by late Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. The Absarokas could see 12 to 18 inches of snow above 10,000 feet, while the Bighorns may collect 6 to 14 inches across the higher peaks. Elevations between 7,000 and 9,000 feet will likely pick up lighter accumulations, ranging from a dusting to about 8 inches.

Travel could become hazardous along US 14 over Granite Pass and US 16 over Powder River Pass, where blowing snow and slick roads are possible. Outdoor enthusiasts and hunters in the mountains this weekend should prepare for near-whiteout conditions and rapidly changing weather.

Residents are advised to delay non-essential mountain travel, pack emergency kits, and monitor updates as conditions develop. Additional advisories may be issued as the storm approaches.
