Cheyenne, WY – Motorists traveling across Wyoming today should prepare for dangerous wind conditions, particularly along Interstate 80. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., impacting stretches of I-80 between mile markers 200 and 290 near Rawlins and Elk Mountain. Southwest gusts could reach speeds of up to 60 mph, posing significant risks to lightweight and high-profile vehicles, such as campers and semi-trucks.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, these wind speeds could create hazardous travel conditions, including overturned vehicles. Officials are advising motorists to monitor Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) alerts and avoid unnecessary travel. Those towing trailers or driving RVs are urged to delay travel plans or reroute if possible.
Adding to the concern, a Red Flag Warning is also in effect across much of Carbon County and surrounding areas, indicating critical fire weather conditions. Wind gusts up to 50 mph, combined with humidity levels as low as 10%, heighten the risk of rapid fire spread. Residents are encouraged to avoid activities like outdoor burning and to report any smoke or flames to local authorities immediately.
Looking ahead, Wyoming’s weather will take a turn starting Sunday, with temperatures dropping significantly and a slight chance of snow in the forecast. Highs will hover near 47°F on Sunday before plunging to the low 20s by Monday night. Thanksgiving week brings continued cold conditions, with additional chances for snow midweek.
Stay updated on weather and road conditions by visiting WYDOT and the National Weather Service website. Travelers and residents should remain vigilant as winds and fire risks persist throughout the day.
