CHEYENNE, Wyoming – With Thanksgiving travel approaching, Wyoming officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for the state’s harsh winter conditions. From Cheyenne to Casper, transportation leaders are urging early maintenance and emergency planning before snow, ice, and high winds return later this month.
According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, early November is the right time to inspect tires, test batteries, top off antifreeze, and replace worn wiper blades. Officials also recommend keeping a fully stocked emergency kit — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.
Motorists traveling I-80, I-25, and U.S. 287 during the Thanksgiving rush should expect strong crosswinds, icy bridges, and long distances between services. “Wyoming’s weather can shift from clear skies to whiteout conditions in minutes,” a WYDOT spokesperson said. “A prepared driver is a safer driver when storms arrive.” Travelers are also encouraged to keep gas tanks at least half full, pack extra clothing, and check WyoRoad.info for live road closures, plow routes, and weather alerts.
As families prepare for Thanksgiving trips, WYDOT stresses that early preparation is the best defense against the unpredictable conditions that define Wyoming’s winter driving season.
