CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Dangerous winds are battering southeast Wyoming this evening, creating hazardous travel conditions along major interstates and mountain passes. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne says multiple High Wind Warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. MST tonight, with gusts as high as 65 mph reported across the region.

According to the Weather Service, the strongest winds are impacting the South and North Laramie Range, Central Laramie County (including Cheyenne), and the Bordeaux area along I-25 between Chugwater and Wheatland. The I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie, along with Arlington and Elk Mountain, is also seeing powerful crosswinds. Sustained winds of 30 to 45 mph are expected through late evening before gradually easing overnight.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) warns that lightweight and high-profile vehicles, including semis, campers, and trailers, are at high risk of blowovers. Drivers should delay travel if possible and check wyoroad.info or dial 511 for the latest road restrictions.

These intense winds are also capable of causing minor property damage and brief power disruptions, especially in exposed areas west of Cheyenne. Calmer conditions will return by early Friday morning, followed by a cooler and quieter weekend across the High Plains.
