CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Heavy snow and powerful mountain winds are expected to hammer the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges beginning early Tuesday, creating hazardous travel and outdoor conditions through Wednesday morning. Up to 10 inches of snow and gusts to 50 mph will make mountain passes and recreation areas treacherous for travelers and hunters.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday. The advisory covers high-elevation areas west of Laramie, including Albany and Centennial, where blowing and drifting snow will sharply reduce visibility.

Forecasters warn that hikers, hunters, and snowmobilers could easily become disoriented in whiteout conditions. Windswept ridges along WY-130 and WY-230 may see near-zero visibility at times, with travel possibly impossible during peak snow bands.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation advises avoiding unnecessary mountain travel, especially overnight Tuesday when snow rates are highest. Those who must drive should slow down, keep emergency gear, and check 511 for real-time road updates.

Residents planning outdoor activities should dress in multiple layers and secure exposed equipment. Officials also urge mountain communities to prepare for possible brief power interruptions as heavy snow and wind impact tree limbs and lines.
