CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Dangerous crosswinds are expected to whip across southeast Wyoming tonight into Sunday, with gusts near 60 mph threatening travel along Interstates 80 and 25. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued High Wind Warnings from late Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon for the South Laramie Range, Foothills, and the North Snowy Range Foothills.
According to the weather service, sustained west winds of 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts will peak between 3 a.m. and noon Sunday. The most hazardous zones include the I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie, and the Bordeaux area along I-25 between Chugwater and Wheatland, where high-profile vehicles such as semis, trailers, and RVs could face dangerous crosswinds. Travel restrictions for light or empty trucks may be implemented by WYDOT during the strongest wind periods.
Residents and motorists are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary mountain travel, and check the Wyoming 511 app or WYDOT updates before heading out. Winds this strong can cause property damage, blow over signs, and down small tree limbs.
Conditions will gradually improve by Sunday evening as winds subside. Cooler and calmer weather is expected to return early in the workweek before another blustery front approaches by midweek.
